How it works
How to open a Google Takeout export
Export your photos
In Google Takeout, deselect everything, then select Google Photos. Pick .zip or .tgz and an archive size. Google emails you the download links – they work for about a week.
Download all the parts
A large library comes split into several files, like takeout-…-001.zip and -002.zip. Keep them together in one folder.
Open them together
Click “Choose ZIP” and select all the parts, or drop them onto this page. Folders like “Photos from 2023” and your albums turn into filters.

Frequently asked questions
No. Choose the ZIP or TGZ files here and the photos appear right away in a gallery, straight from the archives. Unpacking a large export first takes a long time and gigabytes of extra disk space.
A large export comes split into files like takeout-20260101T000000Z-001.zip, -002.zip and so on. Click “Choose ZIP” and select all of them (Ctrl+A or ⌘A in the dialog), or drop them all onto the page. They open as one gallery, with the folders of every part together.
For many photos – screenshots, images saved from chats, older scans – Google keeps the date taken only in a separate .json file, not in the photo itself. Other viewers then sort them by the export date. ZIP Gallery reads those .json files and shows each photo under the day it was taken.
Both work. For a large library, ZIP is the better choice: its photos are read straight from the file as you browse, while a .tgz has to be read through from start to end before the gallery appears. On a phone, ZIP is the safer option too.
They hold each photo’s metadata from Google Photos, like the date taken, the location and the description. ZIP Gallery uses them for the dates and doesn’t show them in the gallery. Keep them with your photos.
No. The archives are opened in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and no account is needed – not even a Google one.
